Chicago to Phoenix: A Four-Day Road Trip Adventure

A journey through the heartland of America, from the bustling streets of Chicago to the sun-kissed landscapes of Phoenix.

Like many families, my parents favored the classic American road trip for our vacations. Whether it was our annual pilgrimage to Springfield, Missouri, or the epic 15-hour drives to New Orleans, we have always hit the road. Even as a child, I found myself enamored with the journey, learning to navigate the roads & highways while belting out every lyric to my dad's favorite tunes. And when I finally got behind the wheel myself, driving became more than just a mode of transportation—it became my sanctuary, my escape along the open road.

In recent years, our adventures have expanded to include our adventure pup, Daphne, as we've journeyed from Manhattan to the Grand Canyon & beyond. Our drives to Phoenix, with its desert vistas and family connections, has become our most cherished escape into nature.

Welcome to my four-day road trip itinerary, celebrating the small businesses, local coffee roasters, and unique offerings that make cross-country travel so special. While I recommend a four-day route, it can be condensed into three days or even extended to a week or more, depending on your preferences. From charming cafes to historic landmarks, each stop along the way offers its own blend of high, low, old & new. So buckle up, and let's hit the road to discover the diverse tapestry of America together, one mile at a time.

Day 1: Chicago, Illinois to Springfield, Missouri

Distance: Approximately 400 miles

Welcome to the first leg of our journey! Tonight, you’ll find yourself in Springfield, Missouri, a charming city steeped in history & nostalgia — a special place to me, as it's also my mother’s hometown.

As you hit the road, I recommend downloading the Love's Travel Stop app, a trusty companion that guides travelers to convenient pit stops along the route, while also offering the perk of saving $0.10/gallon on fuel.

After your initial refueling stop, why not kickstart the trip with a visit to Coffee Hound? Here, you'll be greeted with locally roasted coffee & pastries, setting the perfect tone for the journey ahead. (Honestly, I’m just convinced that stopping the extra 15 minutes for a coffee & a croissant here saved my life one time — a story for another time.)

As you travel through St. Louis, be sure to refuel both your vehicle & yourself at Union Loafers, renowned for their sandwiches crafted with freshly baked bread. Just across the street is AO&Co. Market & Cafe, where I’m usually distracted by the irresistible marketplace tucked away in the back while I wait for my coffee.

After checking into one of the cozy bed & breakfasts or hotels scattered around the city, stroll through the charming streets of downtown Springfield, soaking in the local Ozarks culture & maybe even catching a live music performance. If you’re looking for a more easygoing evening, you can never go wrong with a stop at THE ORIGINAL & largest Bass Pro Shop — I can never seem to stay away.

Day 2: Springfield, Missouri to Amarillo, Texas

Distance: Approximately 500 miles

Heading out of Springfield, start your morning on the right foot with a cortado from The Coffee Ethic or Mudhouse, a staple in town. As you journey further west, the scenery undergoes a dramatic transformation, unveiling the rugged beauty of Texas.

Amarillo awaits, with its iconic Cadillac Ranch standing as a testament to the fusion of art & Americana. But let's not overlook the Tex-Mex culinary delights. Tyler's Barbeque beckons with its mouth-watering brisket, though be warned, it's known to run out after the lunch rush. For those seeking alternative options, Savór Tapas Bar or Hoffbrau Steakhouse & Grill House offer enticing menus to satisfy any craving.

And for the adventurous souls still yearning to explore, a visit to the breathtaking vistas of Palo Duro Canyon State Park is an absolute must, where the desert hues dance beneath the boundless sky.

Day 3: Amarillo, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Distance: Approximately 280 miles

As the sun rises over the Texas panhandle, your journey westward brings you to Albuquerque, the vibrant heart of the Southwest. Fuel up with a morning cup of coffee & a slice of quiche from Palace Coffee Roasters before venturing through the rugged beauty of the Texas-New Mexico borderlands, where mesas and canyons form a breathtaking backdrop.

After a short drive to Albuquerque, immerse yourself in the city's rich Southwestern heritage by wandering through Old Town's historic streets & indulging in traditional New Mexican cuisine at Sadie's of New Mexico—where the heat of green chiles meets the warmth of traditional hospitality. For a new-age touch, head to Mesa Provisions, a James Beard Award Semi-Finalist.

But before diving into the heart of Albuquerque, treat yourself to the luxurious tranquility of Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, a hidden oasis nestled amidst the enchanting New Mexican landscape. With sprawling lavender fields, a historic hacienda, and the award-winning farm-to-table restaurant, Campo, Los Poblanos offers a serene escape from the rigors of the road, inviting weary travelers to unwind & rejuvenate in unparalleled style.

Day 4: Albuquerque, New Mexico to Phoenix, Arizona

Distance: Approximately 420 miles

As you embark on the final day of your adventure, bid farewell to the enchanting city of Albuquerque and set your sights on the last leg of the journey. Before hitting the road, make sure to grab one last lavender latte from Los Poblanos and a ham & swiss sandwich for later—trust me, the fresh-baked bread and stone ground mustard are a road-tripper's dream.

Now, there are two routes you can take from here. The first option is to make a pit stop in Winslow, Arizona, where you can experience the awe-inspiring Meteor Crater (& its winds) before continuing on to Sedona for lunch. If you're looking for a quick bite, Red Rock Cafe is a great option. Alternatively, if you're willing to wait for a dining experience immersed in the Sedona landscape, stop by Hideaway House for al-fresco dining.

Alternatively, you can choose to go straight to Phoenix. Whichever route you take, be sure to travel via I-40 for a scenic journey through the stunning landscapes of the American Southwest.

Nearing your destination, the desert plains quickly transition into bustling forest-covered mountains through Sitgreaves National Forest, eventually giving way to the Tonto National Forest’s towering saguaro cacti, painting a picturesque backdrop against fiery sunsets. Our road trip ends in the vibrant city of Phoenix, where urban sophistication harmonizes with natural beauty. Take some time to explore the city's eclectic neighborhoods, savor the flavors of Southwestern cuisine, and soak up the warm desert sunshine.
